A WiFi QR code stores your network name, its security type and its password in a single scannable image. Phones running recent versions of Android and iOS recognise the format natively, so a guest points their camera at the code, taps the prompt that appears and joins the network. Nobody has to read a long password aloud or retype it with the wrong capitalisation.

How to use it

  • Type your network name exactly as it appears in your WiFi settings, since it is case sensitive.
  • Pick the security type. Almost every modern router uses WPA, which covers WPA2 and WPA3.
  • Enter the password, or choose the open network option if there is not one.
  • Download the image and print it, or show it on a screen for guests to scan.

Where people put them

Cafes and restaurants print them on table cards and menus. Offices put them on the wall in reception and in meeting rooms. Holiday rentals and guest rooms leave them in the welcome pack. At home, a small printed card by the door saves explaining the password to every visitor.

A note on security

The password is stored in the code as readable text, so anyone who can photograph the image can extract it. Treat a printed WiFi code the way you would treat the password written on paper. If you would rather guests not have your main password at all, most routers can run a separate guest network, and you can generate a code for that instead.

Your network details are never uploaded. The code is built entirely inside your browser using JavaScript, so the password never reaches our servers, because there are no servers involved in generating it.
